About me I Sonam Thai chose to be culture and trekking guide because

1) I'm a kind of person who love to connect with a nature.so which means its clearly shows that I'm meant to be a guide, as a guide we always go for hiking and trekking where you will be connect to nature in every tour. So I love doing hiking and trekking.

2)Most of my family members have been working as tourist guide even my dad he was a guide. So I was inspired by my dad and brother who has been working as a culture and trekking guide and I found it as adventure , On top of that History and Geography was my favorite subject which is important for guides.

Amy and I wanted to thank you for the amazing time we had in your special country. The whole team really went out of their way during our tour. You guys really made this such a fantastic trip from amy being on the phone with Namgay, to the The first couple of days in Bhutan on our trip to Haa Valley we got a little car sick. Sonam and Chimmy our first guides and driver were concerned and made sure we were ok, had enough water and just made sure we took our time driving even stopping when I needed a break periodically throughout the drive. They were so nice to us and it was a pleasure to have them welcome us when we came out of the airport. Sonam and Chimmy answered all our questions and explained the history and the culture of Bhutan. We both found the two of them so knowledgeable and informative. They even asked us if the food was too spicy. We replied we liked spicy and from then on they made sure we got the real Bhutanese food. All they really wanted to do was make sure Amy and I had a great time and they were so wonderful to us it was a little sad we had to say good bye to them when we traveled east.

Our next guide and driver, Thai and Brother Ong really made us feel like family during the time we spent with them. One of the mountain passes we had to drive ended up being closed because of snow, they had a plan for what to do before we even asked what is the new plan. We both had no issue and realized that they have no control that this happens and we just went with it. They ended up surprising us with a masked dance festival in Lhuntse. It came as a complete surprise to us and what a special sight that we will never forget. The car broke down once on the road through no fault of Brother Ong and Thai and Brother had a back up plan right away and arranged for a taxi to take us to the fortress and the next town. The hole time their concern was more for us and making sure we were taking care of. We made it to the next town and met Brother Ong at the hotel everybody was in great spirits. Thai answered all of our questions and we were impressed with his knowledge and the fact that if we asked something and he didn't know he was honest about not knowing something and always knew who to call to find out. Another day we were driving to cross another mountain pass the car decided it wanted to break down again. The good thing was that we had made it to the top of the pass. Amy and I made the best of our time as I went tobogganing on a piece of plywood I found and Amy read a book. Both of them were so apologetic that this happened a second time. It was really nice since there was a little cabin there and we were able to go inside and warm up while we waited for another car to come and pick us up and get to the next location. We both were sad we had to leave Brother Ong on the mountain but Thai kept in contact with him and informed us he got down ok which was really nice to hear.

Our next driver Kinse (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong) was fantastic. The banter between Thai and Kinse really made our time with them fun and exciting with the jokes flying during our time in the car. Thai always made sure we had chili paste with our meals and showed us where the best momos in Bhutan were and even introduced us to local regional dishes where ever we stayed. I will never forget Thai coming out and telling us that the kitchen staff were laughing because they haven't seen a westerner eat the chillis, our faces were burning but the food was too good to stop. When they heard that we like to cook they even set up a cooking class for us to learn how to make emi dashi so we could have it when we got back to Canada. On our trip to the market something I ate there did not agree with me and Kinse ran down to the parking lot just to get me a bottle of water since we couldn't find one in the market. The level that everyone went to make sure we were ok was above and beyond and just made us feel special. Seeing the Black necked Cranes was just a fantastic day spent in the valley and it was nice to have a hike to do since spending so much time in the car.

The hike up to the Tigers nest was great and Thai and Kinse made sure that we set the pace and took our time getting up. We really appreciated that there was never a rush and if we wanted more time to rest we were able to do so. Even told us were the best picture spots were on the trail to get the perfect picture of the monastery. Thai was even so nice as to get our prayer flags that we had bought blessed by one of the monks that were there. We really appreciated that and meant a lot to us. They were with us the hole way and made sure they explained the history and the different temples we visited there that day. Even had a fantastic homestay meal after our hot stone bath which was a great way to cap off a fantastic day.

I received an email to leave a review with Druk Asia but felt that the level of service we have received and how all the guides, drivers and office staff have made us feel like family we felt we had to leave more then just a review. Everybody was so professional and knowledgeable that it made Bhutan such a special place we have visited and will always stay with us and the friendships we have formed and the good and special times we have had at various points of the tour. The accommodations and meals where fantastic and enjoyed every meal we had during the tour. Also, everyone was so great with my food allergies and it was never an issue with a meal. Amy and I wanted to say Thank you to the whole team for making this such a life changing trip with the history, culture and really inviting us into your family. We really cant say enough good things about everyone we came across with Druk Asia.

It is going to be the longest review I have ever written, please bear with me! Bhutan has long been in my bucket list, and I can now proudly say that I’ve checked it off! Ugyen Dema was in charge of organizing my entire trip, from itinerary to flights, visa and travel insurance. Responses were fast, usually within a day even on weekends.

Upon exiting the arrival hall, I immediately felt at ease having spotted my guide Sonam Thia [ST], who was holding on to my name with a big smile and guided me to my driver Kapo was waiting at the carpark for me. Upon hearing that I am hungry due to the time zone difference on the first night, my driver Kapo even bought me titbits and chocolates in case I felt hungry way before meal time on the second day. Definitely a commendable action by Kapo, and appreciate his effort in making sure that I am not hungry and comfortable throughout the journey.

I am glad that the dates which I am traveling falls during one of the festivals called Druk Wangyel. I had such a fun time watching the performance without even realizing that two hours had went past and despite not understanding what they were singing or performing. We visited the Dochula Pass, however it has not started to snow, but my guide ST assured me that we would be able to see it after we return from Punakha. True enough we visited Dochula Pass again. End route we stopped the car and played with snowball, and had so much fun throwing snow at each other. My driver Kapo will make the snow fall effect, while my guide ST would be the photographer taking photos of me having fun posing, jumping and playing with the snow. My guide ST often ask me whether the photo taken are ok, otherwise he will take it again. All the photos taken by him were perfect, and therefore I didn’t have to get him to retake.

Even though we were met with the public holiday during my trip, my guide ST managed to make changes to the itinerary and ensure that we manage to complete all the places. On the last day to Tiger Nest, I had to take it slow as it was physically taxing. My driver helped me to carry my bag and both my guide and him would give me a helping hand whenever required and even ensured that I was well hydrated throughout the journey.

Knowing that I would normally have fish as one of my dishes almost every day, my guide ST specially arranged a fish dish on my last lunch, which was definitely a thoughtful touch! Finally, I had fish after 5 days, and am definitely thankful and grateful for the effort that goes into making the arrangement.

My guide ST was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the places we visited. Thanks for explaining and answering my questions. I have definitely gained valuable knowledge and better understand Bhutan now after the trip! My driver Kapo was very skillful in driving, always making sure that I am comfortable during the rides.

Thank you so much in taking care of me, treating me as a friend. As I bid farewell to the Land of the Thunder Dragon, I will definitely miss the fresh air, the friendly and kind people and the delicious foods! I will definitely be going back again to explore the other part of the country.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Druk Asia, ST and Kapo to the rest of the travellers. Having shared how professional ST and Kapo were, my friends and colleagues have already started to plan for a Bhutan trip and expressed interests to have them as their guide and driver.

Thank you Druk Asia for the lovely calendar and postcard. I will definitely use it at my work desk. It was so nice with all the places and events that took place even with both public holiday of the countries.

We love our Bhutan trip. Drukasia did a wonderful job. Namgay was responsive and accommodating during the booking process.

Our tour guide Sonam is the best. He was very pleasant, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. He was very much willing to take care of our baby. Our driver, brother Dorji was great too.

As Sonam said, we came as a visitor but went home as a friend/family.

We would love to come back to Bhutan in the future and still book with DrukAsia

Our 06 days and 05 nights in Bhutan cannot be described as just a holiday on a bucket list, since, in general, my husband and I had an amazing journey in the country during the cold of January.

First of all, let me register that choosing Druk Asia was an output of a really long selection process. My husband and I are complete control freaks, and we contacted several different companies and talked to many friends who had already visited the country before making our choice. We even prepared a spreadsheet comparing all assets from the different companies available and concluded that Druk Asia was in fact our best choice – which was proven right.

The contact with DrukAsia’s representative, Inez Bratahalim, in their Singapore Office, was generally smooth. She was always very helpful and polite. My husband and I are from Brazil but live in Jakarta, Indonesia and the entire enquiry and booking process with DrukAsia was through exchange of e-mails with Inez and she was very attentive and efficient every time. From arranging visas, booking the air tickets, upgrading us to business class, advising on hotel booking options and even recommending which side of the plane we should sit to get the best views of the Himalayan range, she ensured the trip began and ended without any anxieties.

We did have two problems, however. First, regarding our hotels in Thimphu and Punakha: we requested two specific hotels in both these cities and we were told that it would be ok to book them, just to receive a message, weeks later, saying that those two hotels were unavailable, which was not great (they could have told us this from the start).

The second problem is because we had specifically asked the office in Singapore to tell our guide in Bhutan that we would like to (1) wear the traditional outfit; (2) take a hot stone bath; and (3) participate in a cooking class. Those requests were promptly accepted and it was said that our guide would be aware of them, which did not happen. It seemed like a problem of communication and coordination from the office in Singapore and the office in Thimphu. However, we were able to talk to our guide upon our arrival in the country and arrange to do almost everything we wanted in the first place, including hoisting flags in the Tiger Nest’s mountain.

That is why, taking into consideration the general experience, the problems I mentioned were small and did not affect the positive feeling we have from the trip. In fact, Inez always sent us great spirited messages, and to have her kind e-mail informing us about our visa approval right before the holidays of the end of the year seemed like a Christmas gift!

Then we arrived in Paro airport, with a mix of good and bad overwhelming feelings – both by the magnificent view from the left side of the plane (as recommended) and the terrifying (for me, a bad flyer) landing among the range of mountains, when the pilot had to show off all his flying skills. As combined, we were greeted by Thai, our guide, and Jimmy, the driver. From the start, Thai dealt with all our queries with great courtesy and promptly and he made us experience wonderful kindness and feel like welcomed guests throughout our stay.

For 06 days, Thai introduced us to Bhutan and its gentle and friendly people. We experienced warm hospitality, patience, good humour and great depth of knowledge on Bhutanese history, culture and religion. During our daily car trips, Thai and us debated some interesting topics (such as politics, drugs, gender issues, sexuality, Western and Eastern cultures), discussed several issues both in Buthan and in Brazil and he was even interested in learning some words in Portuguese. He was extremely open minded about us being gay and flexible enough when we had to change to a bigger car to accommodate all the luggage we had (which only increased during our stay, due to our several shoppings) – and from that day on we said goodbye to Jimmy, the driver, and hello to Pasam, the other driver, who also did a phenomenal job not only as a fearless and competent driver (thank God, since cars in Bhutan usually do not always have seat belts because of their legislation, which scared me to death!) but also as a photographer (seriously, his photos of us were so great that he should think about getting a job on that area).

With the help of Thai, Jimmy (for the first two days) and Pasam (for the last four days), we managed to do everything we wanted in the country, without having to sacrifice or skipping other planned activity in the itinerary. During our stay, we’ve enjoyed not only our regular activities (and I couldn’t mention one in particular, since everything, from the hot stone bath to the temples and the hiking to the Tiger’s Nest, was so special) but we’ve also been blessed with majestic views of dense green forests with towering junipers and pines, gushing waterfalls, unexpected wildlife (including a rare white monkey whose sight appears to bring luck to people – yay!), thick snow covering stupas and grass, jaw dropping valleys, temples and dzongs nestled in slopes, clouds rolling over the mountain tops, ever present dogs (which might be the friendliest I’ve seen – and they particularly liked hanging around Thai, “the dog whisperer”), and dry rice fields on the mountainsides – a testament to the Bhutanese winter, which we particularly enjoyed over several cups of tea and hot chocolate anywhere we went to. What more could we ask for?

All the hotels we stayed in Thimphu (Namgay Heritage), Punakha (Zhingkham) and Paro (Zhiwa Ling) were clean and had good service. Zhiwa Ling was clearly the one we loved the most (we felt extremely welcomed after arriving in our warm room and seeing, from the veranda, the lights of the Tiger’s Nest, the mountain we had spent the day fearlessly climbing), and Namgay Heritage was our least favorite (we did not have hot water for the first day) but overall all of our stays were problem free and in all of them we were able to enjoy a delicious Buthanese dish comprised of potatoes, called Qewa Datshi (we even got the recipe to try to do it at home!). The hotels may be missing the sophistication and glitz of big city hotels, but I wouldn’t compare them to hotels in Madrid, Rio or Amsterdam. Besides, it was more than made up for by the gentle spirit of hospitality – Bhutanese people are very friendly. And I can’t stress enough how this can really make a difference.

As if the trip was not formidable enough, we were treated to a special event on the flight home. No other than the King of Buthan himself boarded the airplane, accompanied by his wife, the Queen, his soon, the Prince, and a small security team. We were all flabbergasted in the business class of the Druk Air flight to Bangkok, as the King actually approached our seats and talked to us! I have the chills just thinking about it and at that time it was difficult to say something, as I was so nervous to talk to a royal. Fortunately, I was able to tell him what a great country Bhutan is and what a fabulous experience we had in his nation. We landed in Bangkok sad, because the trip was over, but deeply touched by what we’ve had seen and done.

To Thai, Pasam, Jimmy, Inez and all who made this trip so unforgettable: kadrin chhey, thank you, obrigado!! We will always treasure emotional memories of the near perfect days we had in Bhutan! It was simply magical! We are more than satisfied with Druk Asia and looking forward to go back to this magical country at some point in the future.

Firstly thank you for attending to our trip request and the arrangement has been seamlessly easy for us.

Secondly, while the original guide (Namgay Tenzin) had been replaced by Sonam Thai and Chenchu Dorji (the driver), we are very pleased with their services.

Thai has been most attentive to our needs and repeatedly trying to ensure we receive the best treatment in terms of photo shots, meals and give extra mile to put us at ease. We are happy to recommend him (+ Chenchu) to our friends should they decide to go Bhutan as well.

As i did not expect some degree of trekking and climb during certain hiking especially to the Tiger Nest but Thai has been most supportive in ensuring that i persisted till the end! We finally reach the top of Tiger Nest and be awed by the mystical temple resting on the mountain rock.

In short, both Thai and Chenchu have been fun to be with and we did have some enjoyable exchanges!

Your country is absolutely natural, untouched and culturally intact which should be the key preservation as a differentiation!

Oi Leng and Richard.
